We observed that notification systems are designed to demand immediate attention, interrupting face-to-face interactions, hence leading to the design of Pixie Pause to soften notifications and redirect attention back to social presence.

Pixie Pause explores how constant notifications reshape social behaviour in shared spaces. Through observation, it became evident that people are often physically present but mentally elsewhere, drawn into their phones during moments of conversation. This is not a failure of self-control, but a design issue where notifications are intentionally disruptive, pulling attention away from real-life interactions and fragmenting social connection. Over time, this creates a subtle but significant disconnection between individuals, even in face-to-face settings. Pixie Pause addresses this by rethinking how a phone behaves during social moments. Instead of demanding immediate attention, notifications appear as soft pixel indicators without revealing their source, reducing the urge to check. As notifications accumulate, they are translated into time that encourages users to engage in conversation through a series of mini activities designed to promote face-to-face interaction. A physical rotary control allows users to access and navigate these activities, shifting the phone into a shared, social mode. A summary page presents a balance between total notifications received and time spent socialising, allowing users to reflect on their habits. By reframing notifications as a prompt for presence rather than distraction, Pixie Pause encourages more intentional and meaningful social interaction.
